You inherited a set of risks, and medicine’s job was to manage what showed up. That picture has changed considerably, and it changes what prevention currently means.

Genes don’t operate in isolation. Which ones are switched on, and which stay quiet, is continuously influenced by diet, movement, sleep, stress and the substances we’re exposed to. This is epigenetics: your genetic code stays fixed, but which parts of it get expressed changes. It’s one of the reasons two people with an identical genetic risk for, say, type 2 diabetes can have entirely different outcomes over a lifetime.

Closely tied to this is chronic inflammation. It sits underneath most of what shows up in a chronic disease clinic: cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and much of what accelerates ageing, often years before there’s a diagnosis to explain it. And inflammation itself is modifiable by the same everyday factors that influence gene expression.

This is what makes the six pillars, physical activity, nutrition, restorative sleep, social connection, stress management and avoiding harmful substances, genuine root-cause therapy. Each one has a measurable effect on inflammatory markers and gene expression.

Exercise changes how muscle tissue responds to insulin. Sleep quality affects immune regulation. Chronic stress keeps inflammatory pathways switched on long after the stressor has passed. This is biology responding to daily input, most of it well within your control.

If gene expression responds daily to how you live, and how you live is largely within your control, which genes would you like to express differently from now on?","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
For most of the twentieth century, genetics was treated as fixed.
